If you have one or more desktop computers or laptops for students to use in your classroom, here are some helpful tips for creating and managing your classroom’s Technology center:
1. Use an online bookmarking tool to store and organize your favorite websites. My favorite is Symbaloo because of its visual interface. Each tile visually shows the website to which it is linked and clicking on the tile automatically launches that site. Below is the Symbaloo page I set up for my son’s First grade class (drag the scroll bar on the bottom of the webmix below to the right to see all of the resources). Symbaloo allows you to add markers to group websites by subject (see the tile background colors below). These webmixes can be shared with a simple link you can send to parents for easy home access to the resources. Also keep in mind that you can create more than one webmix on your account so you can have one for each subject or keep a separate private webmix for your PD resources or your favorite online teacher resources. The best part is that Symbaloo is free – register here to get started. (Note: There is a Pro version but it is really not necessary to purchase this paid plan, at least not initially.) More information about Symbaloo coming soon… please subscribe for updates!
2. Keep student login credentials for subscription websites in a bin at the technology center. Each student should have their own laminated login cards for each program that requires login access. If there are multiple cards for each student, hole punch the laminated cards and put them on a binder ring such as the one below.
3. Use task cards to direct students toward specific activities. Check out the Tech Time Activity Cards in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Below is a preview of the product…
4. Keep a binder or clipboard with daily technology log sheets so that when your students use the computers, they can write their name and the activity they completed. This will help you keep track of what your students are doing during Technology time. Click here to download this Activity Log freebie from my Teachers Pay Teachers store.
Please come back often for more tips on successfully managing the Technology center in your classroom.
